Tom and Ann were in their late 50’s, but looked and felt at least 10 years older – their business was slowly killing them. It demanded 70 hours a week, with Sunday mornings finishing off paperwork. Holidays were few and far between. Hobbies were none existent. Stress, lots.
Requirements: to escape from their business before it finished them off. Ambitions: Learn to fly ‘before it was too late’.
On talking with us, it soon became apparent that substantial funds had been accumulated in various investments, including pensions etc. These discussions also enabled them to identify the kind of lifestyle they’d really like.
Tom and Ann revealed that they had recently rejected an offer of €2million for their business because their accountant had persuaded them that the potential value was closer to €3 million. So there they were, still working and waiting, and worrying and stressing..
They contacted us as a friend of Tom’s had recommended they speak with a Certified Financial Planner CFP®. When we set to work and did some figures, we found they needed just €1,300,000 to retire NOW. That included the cost of flying lessons and the purchase of a light aircraft. And this was to start living the life they wanted NOW.
Trouble is, they’d turned down €2 million!
With our help they managed to get the deal back on the table and ended up selling for the €2 million. We also spent time with their accountant explaining the methodology we used to crunch the numbers. While initially he was against the plan, it became very apparent that our plan made sense.
Moral of the story: You’ve got to get a good deal but you’ve also got to be fair to the other guy.
Tom and Ann could have held out for more than the €2 million and maybe they would, maybe they wouldn’t have got more. Their lives in the meantime were passing them by, putting in 70 hour weeks. Tom’s flying now though and they both continue to enjoy their retirement and look – AND FEEL – 10 years younger.
It pays to know your number! Do you know yours, or would you like to?
